FAQs
How long will an order take?
After reviewing the quote we will provide you an estimated timeline based on the current work schedule and project details. This is usually in the 3-5 week range. Bigger or more complex projects may take more time. If you need something by a certain date let us know.
What wood do you use?
We work with local species such as walnut, maple, ash, elm, oak, cherry and other trees commonly found in Ontario.
Is your wood kiln dried?
Every piece we use has been properly dried and stored. We would never compromise our work with improperly dried slabs. All of our wood comes from one reputable kiln that we’ve been working with for years.
Can I scratch the wood?
Short answer, yes. Everything can be scratched and our tables are no exception. Depending on the finish and gloss levels, scratch visibility will vary. All of the products we make are created with hardwoods, and generally are pretty tough to mark up with regular use, but using placemats and avoiding high heat objects will prevent 99% of deep scratches. The benefit of using a solid wood is the ability to repair it, and make it look brand new for the duration of your product’s lifetime.
How do we clean the wood?
We recommend cleaning your product with a damp paper towel with some soapy water or a 1 to 10 mix of vinegar and water. Then rub it dry with a cloth. . Avoiding the use of any harsh chemical cleaners will prolong the finish on your table / shelf / desk.
Oil & Wax vs Urethane finish?
Oil and wax finish differs from finishes such as urethane by penetrating the wood and forming a seal within the wood’s outer layer. The benefit is a natural look and feel, and decreased visibility of scratches. Depending on the frequency of use and of water exposure, the finish might fade over the years. Periodically re-oiling the table will bring back its lustre and maintain its water and spill resistance. This needs to be done every two to five years depending on use. The application takes a few minutes and is quite simple to do by hand.
Urethane finish is an oil or water based finish requiring very little care. We use this finish for commercial applications such as restaurants or high-traffic environments. These often leave a plastic feel to the wood but provides an excellent seal to keep moisture out. Simple cleaning with a damp paper towel will be sufficient to keep your table looking new for many years to come.
Where do you source the wood?
Everything is purchased from a few local suppliers based in the GTA. The majority of the trees are from Ontario. We then kiln dry everything to get the moisture content to a furniture grade level and flatten them. I hand pick all my slabs for clients in order to find the perfect piece for a project.
The wood is categorized as salvaged wood. Not reclaimed from barns / past projects. There is a variety of sources for salvaged wood, including roadside or “urban salvage” when trees are removed from cities or roadsides due to safety or other issues. As well as orchard items for trees that are no longer producing.
